For this global initiative, the Center for International Theatre Development—working with writer and translator John Freedman and Maksym Kurochkin, the Ukrainian playwright and leader of the new Theatre of Playwrights in Kyiv—gave 23 Ukrainian playwrights $1,000 each to create new works that offer a first draft of history through a theatrical lens. These plays are being performed around the world, as fundraising events for Ukraine-based organizations. Events have already taken place in Hong Kong, Finland, Germany, Poland, Austria, and the U.S., with more theaters and organizations joining daily. Circuit Arts is proud to be participating.
Directed by Brooke Hardman Ditchfield and featuring Amy Barrow, Nicole Galland, Chelsea McCarthy, and Mac Young, this evening’s staged readings of five pieces—short plays, monologues, and scenes—were all written by playwrights still in Ukraine, in direct response to Russia's invasion in February 2022.
