The Town of Tisbury was incorporated 350 years ago — July 8, 1671 — but what is Tisbury? Alone among the Vineyard’s six towns, it seems to lack a clear identity. A deeper look, however, reveals that Tisbury has had many identities, and that its history as a town is, in many ways, the history of the Island in miniature. Join MVM research librarian Bow Van Riper for a fast-paced trip through the story of the town the Museum now calls home: Wampanoag homeland, colonial backwater, a hotbed of intrigue and rebellion, industrial center, summer resort, and once-and-future crossroads of the maritime world.
