Sail MV Winter Lecture Series

Bruce Strickrott will speak on WHOI’s Alvin submersible.

Mr. Strickrott is the Manager and Chief Pilot of the DSV Alvin Submersible Engineering and Operations Group at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). Alvin, and its support ship, the R/V Atlantis, are owned by the U.S. Navy and operated as part of the U.S. National Deep Submergence Facility, headquartered at WHOI. The NDSF is funded primarily by the National Science Foundation and Office of Naval Research. Mr. Strickrott joined the Alvin operations team in 1996 and has logged over 380 dives in Alvin (for a total time of over 2400 hours submerged over 100 days). Mr. Strickrott has travelled extensively with the submersible team, supporting scientists from around the world, exploring some of the most remote deep-sea environments on the planet. He has participated in five major Alvin overhaul events including the completion of the newest Alvin in 2013. Currently, Mr. Strickrott has oversight of the engineering and operations groups working on new designs to complete Alvin’s final systems conversion for 6500-meter depth certification. Mr. Strickrott’s early career was spent in the U.S. Navy. He has a Bachelor of Science in Ocean Engineering from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida, graduating cum laude in 1996. On his time off he enjoys flying planes, working on jeeps (or any other moving vehicle), skiing and other outside activities. He lives in Falmouth, MA, with his fiancé and his two daughters.
