The Carnegie, the historic Edgartown landmark owned and operated by Vineyard Trust, is hosting a special photography exhibition of Libby Ellis’ work. Joyful Participation in a World of Sorrows features large-format black-and-white photographs of flora grown in local gardens.
Even in this year of challenge and loss, nature offers us opportunities to restore and reconnect and to find moments of beauty amid chaos. Like many, photographer Ms. Ellis finds healing and delight in the blooming seasons — from hopeful crocus buds of late winter to exuberant summer cosmos. In the warm tonality of her large-scale, black-and-white photographs, Ms. Ellis invites nature to arrange itself, with room enough for torn leaves, tangled stems, rumpled petals, and hidden insects. Her contemplative flower portraits reveal, through light and composition, joyful beauty during sorrowful times.
On view at The Carnegie Tuesday - Saturday from September 22 through October 31 and Thursday - Saturday from November 5 to November 7.
