Mushroom identification and Watercolor Class For Kids and Families

Join author and educator Melany from Brattleboro, Vt. for a kid and family friendly event focusing on wild mushrooms!

Melany will read from her recent book Mason Goes Mushrooming and will bring a selection of wild and cultivated mushrooms for an ID session. The session is interactive, kids will be able to touch, smell, observe the details of the fungi, and then use them as still-life models for their own watercolor illustrations and artwork.

Melany Kahn is a first-time author, but a long-time forager. She started hunting for mushrooms in Vermont in 1968 at age four when her family of artists (Emily Mason and Wolf Kahn) settled on a farm in West Brattleboro. Wolf learned how to forage on Martha’s Vineyard under the guidance of Alex Reed. She has volunteered to lead children and their adults foraging for wild edible mushrooms for over 22 years. Learning 1-2 beginner mushrooms offers multiple generations of a family the opportunity to share nature while foraging together to create several gourmet feasts a year. Her woodland walks with families to gather edible mushrooms include the culinary aspects of wild mushrooms through recipes, cooking demos, and tastings.
