A master of the family drama, Japanese auteur Hirokazu Kore-Eda's films are so quiet and subtle that only until you are deeply into it do you realize he’s taking you through an emotional minefield. The story of a divorced gambling addict named Ryota (the brilliant Hiroshi Abe) who slowly confronts the fact that he’s becoming the deadbeat dad his father was, After the Storm is one of Kore-Eda’s finest efforts. And like all of his films, it is humanistic, sensitive, and full of the staggering simplicity of everyday life.
