Live reading of speech by Frederick Douglass, an escaped slave, who became one of the most powerful speakers in the abolitionist movement.
Douglass's speech “What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?” was first presented to the women of the Rochester Anti-Slavery Sewing Society on July 5, 1852 at Corinthian Hall in Rochester, New York.
Support for this program was provided by The Federated Church of Martha’s Vineyard and the Friends of the Edgartown Free Public Library. This program is dedicated to all those who are still slaves.
