About this Event
View map Free EventIn collaboration with our town Libraries and DPWs, and brought to fruition by dozens of volunteers, VCS has launched an exciting new beach cleanup initiative – Beach BeFrienders!
Join us on the Saturday of Easter weekend for a trash hunt! Bring the whole family for an afternoon of fun and community service!
Check-in anytime between 2-6pm at these 3 locations for bags and gloves: 1. Lighthouse Beach (Beach Bird Aware tutorial at 2 p.m.); 2. Chappy Ferry (free foot-crossing); or 3. Wilson's Landing (on Edgartown Great Pond). We would like to thank the Great Pond Foundation for co-sponsoring this event and hosting Wilson's Landing!
If you are up for a Chappy adventure, there will be free rides and bags/gloves for all beFrienders going by foot.
We would also like to thank BiodiversityWorks MV for offering a 2-part Beach Bird Aware tutorial at Lighthouse Beach at 2 p.m. BWorks Beach Bird Conservation staff Liz Olson and Silas Beers will present on how to "do no harm" and befriend beach birds when cleaning beaches. They will answer questions as well as show which groups monitor birds on the different beaches should anyone find an unprotected nest. All are welcome to join us in learning how to be 'good eggs' and beach bird ambassadors.
There are two ways to participate:
1) On the fourth weekend of every month, a volunteer will be at a pre-selected location with bags and gloves. They will also handle disposal of the trash collected.
2) Or, “BeFriend a Beach” anytime and anywhere you like! Stop by any Island library and pick up one of our special VCS trash stickers (available mid-May), put that on your collected junk, and the transfer stations will take it free of charge.
For more info please email us and sign up today to let us know you’re interested in joining the crew – thank you for helping protect our Island beaches!
