Join us for a presentation by author and playwright Leslie Brody on her newly published biography Sometimes You Have to Lie: The Life and Times of Louise Fitzhugh, Renegade Author of Harriet the Spy. The talk of publishing circles, Ms. Brody’s book brings the rich, creative, and radical life of Fitzhugh to life, from her pampered girlhood in the segregated south to her career in New York as a painter, writer, and illustrator. The book captures the spirit of the mid-sixties and its confluence of youth culture, sexual politics, social justice, and individual freedom that Fitzhugh reflected in her writing. The tremendous success of Harriet the Spy (now a children’s literary classic) made certain Fitzhugh would be remembered primarily as a writer, but Brody will introduce to us the entire artist.
