Arboretum Talk: Learning How to Be on Wampanoag Land

David Two Arrows and Saskia Vanderhoop are the founders of Sassafras Earth Education, an Indigenous nonprofit in Aquinnah, and have been mentoring youth and adults for 20 years. David is an Aquinnah Wampanoag elder born and raised traditionally on Noêpe.

David and Saskia will be addressing the following topics: acknowledging Indigenous territories and peoples; a truthful representation of history with a focus on Wampanoag and Noêpe history; Sassafras Earth Education and mentoring in ancestral skills and knowledge; land culture and how Wampanoag people identify with the land and the underlying spiritual values; and strategies of repair and activism that lift up Indigenous voices.
