Juneteenth, commemorating the effective end of slavery in the United States, is honored far and wide -- and right here on Martha’s Vineyard. All are invited to celebrate the occasion at the 4th annual Taste of Juneteenth on Sunday, June 22, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Portuguese American Club, 137 Vineyard Ave., Oak Bluffs. Tickets are $75 and benefit the NAACP and the MV NAACP's Scholarship Fund. Participating chefs include Chef Deon of Deon’s Kitchen, Chef Lori, Chef Newton Waite of Vineyard Caribbean Cuisine, Chef Shawn Ramoutar, Juli Vanderhoop of Orange Peel Bakery, and Winston's Kitchen. Freedom Cartwright will be the featured speaker, and the Island Hip-Hop Dance Group will perform. The event is hosted by the Martha’s Vineyard Branch of the NAACP.
