Breaking Free from Plastic: Packaging-Free Grocery Shopping

The first workshop in the Breaking Free from Plastic series, co-sponsored by Plastic Free on MV and the Vineyard Conservation Society.

Demystify Zero Waste shopping by learning tips and tricks to avoid plastic packaging at the grocery store. Come with questions - leave with solutions.

Containers and packaging account for 23% of all landfill waste, and a very large portion of this is plastic. Plastic packaging finds its way into waterways, where it poses a serious threat to marine life, and ultimately us too. Most of the trash floating on the ocean’s surface is plastic, and as it breaks down it can release toxic chemicals, harming marine life and people who eat seafood.

The average American throws away 185 pounds of plastic every year. If we want to limit the amount of toxins we are releasing into the environment and our exposure to toxic chemicals, minimizing plastic packaging while at the grocery store is a great place to start.
